Izabella weaves yarn into artistic mats in a work collective run by women known as the Nanyuki Spinners and Weavers. It was started with the goal of training poor, windowed and single women living in the surrounding villages of Nanyuki in the craft of spinning, knitting and weaving to make them self reliant according to their website. Nanyuki was chosen because it is one of the major wool producing areas in Kenya due to favorable weather for sheep rearing and raising. Half of the proceeds acquired go directly to the women and the other half is retained at the centre.

Participants begin the “Running of the Santas .5K” event hosted by Visit Cheyenne beginning at Chronicles Distilling. “This year we added the aspect of them having to go into small business to encourage them to see these places and to add another fun element,” said organizer Jenna McCormick. Participants were offered a drink and had to receive a sticker on their passports from each location to complete the run. Locations included Desperado Depot, Chronicle Distilling, Freedoms Edge, Alexis Drake, The Albany, and Accomplice Beer Company.

Paraeducator Catherine Hamilton, right, hosts a small reading group in a space that was formerly a custodial closet at Arp Elementary School in Cheyenne. From left, Wrigley Lott, 5, Isabella Funari, 6, and Maddox Osier, 5, read “Big and Little” together. Hamilton has worked at Arp for 14 years, and this year was the first time she’s had her own space. “Thirteen years of classroom corners and hallways,” she recalls. “They moved a shelf out of the custodial closet to make space for a table and me.” Despite the cramped quarters, Hamilton meets with multiple groups of students throughout the day, including three reading groups in the morning, three sound groups just before lunch, and three math groups in the afternoon. Next year, Arp Elementary students will be moved to Eastridge Elementary as part of a first stage in the LCSD1 South triad facilities plan, according to Superintendent Margaret Crespo.
